Earth Day Chair Project

Apr 22

newchair

Earth Day is here. Over 1 billion people all over the WORLD
participate in EARTH DAY, which makes this celebration the
biggest on the planet!!

Do you remember our tips on how to make an old chair new?
It is so easy to do:

1) Simply clean your old chair with a bucket of warm water
and environmentally friend soap.
2) Sand the old chair with sandpaper where ever there
are bumps or cuts. Start with 60 grit for the roughest parts. Make sure the chair’s surface is smooth finish with 120 grit.
3) Draw a simple picture of your chair and color or decorate it as you want.
4) Go to your LOCAL hardware store. Pick out MILK PAINT colors that match your drawing.
5) Paint your old chair with MILK PAINT to match your cute
drawing. Use a house brush for large areas and painter’s brush for small details
6) Let your chair dry outside in the air.
7) Sand the chair lightly with 200 grit and paint once more.
8) Use the 200 grit sandpaper once more to smooth out the 2nd coat of MILK PAINT.
9) Wipe the chair with a soft cloth.
7) ENJOY YOUR CHAIR!

Kirby’s Dad’s Oxen

Max and Baxter local oxen

Max and Baxter

Max and Baxter were working today! They are so cute and furry.
I like petting them a lot when they are not pulling old logs
out of the forest. Today, Kirby’s Dad was harvesting more dead wood
from his forest. His Dad makes birdhouses, furniture, and
wood flooring from the old logs he finds.

Kirby told me his Dad never removes dead logs that
are homes for animals, or non-diseased trees. He only
selects dead trees that have either been
blown down by the wind and could cause harm.

Max and Baxter like Myles but sometimes he barks at them.
He is partly to mostly terrier and terriers like to bark
for fun sometimes. Max and Baxter are so huge Myles is barely taller
than their big hooves so they probably don’t hear him anyway.

A Great Year Fishing

Apr 18

On Saturday, My Dad is going with his friends fly fishing in
the Wolf River. He said that the Walleye are running.
Running means that the fish are passing through the river
in large groups now.

I like fly fishing. I like the boots. I like wearing the
fly fishing boots in the stream near us, because they
are waterproof and so big. I like to look at all the
creatures that live in stream near us when I wear
the boots.

Earth Day Basics

turnoff-lights

Earth Day demands small simple steps together. Our tips my friends and I came up with are still useful today!

  • Turn off the lights when exiting a room.
  • Turn off the T.V. and unplug it when you are done watching it.
  • Turn off the computer if you are not using it.
  • Recycle plastic containers, cardboard and paper.
  • Make your own compost from food waste, yard waste and paper with non-toxic inks like soy.
  • Turn the heat down in your house and wear layers of clothing instead.
  • Use a timer and set to five minutes when you shower.
  • Turn off the water when you are brushing your teeth.
  • Make old clothes new by adding pockets with a different fabric. Have your mom sew the pocket for you.
  • If you like your old shoes keep them new by new different colored shoe lace like pink, or sky blue.
  • Don’t buy bottled water buy a nice, cute metal thermos made in the U.S.A if possible.
  • Take the bus or ride your bike to school or the library if your parents let you.
  • Don’t buy a new sketchbook or notebook, upcycle old books or magazines, and paint, write or draw, over the pages instead.

Remember you are helping to keep the earth livable for all creatures big and small, animal and plant when you practice these tips above.
Give yourself a pat on the back each time you remember these small, simple steps.

Thank you!

My Chipmunk Dream

Apr 16

BeatricesDream

Last night I had the strange CHIPMUNK dream again. I was a chipmunk running through our backyard. And for some reason I decide to run up to the big glass window near our kitchen door.

As I came closer to the kitchen the sun reflected a rainbow off the window’s glass. Through the rainbow I saw Myles and my animal friends staring at me. They were in their usual spot by the glass door of our back porch. They were smiling at me and pointing. I stood on my hind legs, and sniffed the air. I then heard a hawk’s shrill call and jumped to the grass. I flattened myself out as I saw a large black shadow on the grass get larger and larger. I heard a loud THUD
and then woke up.

Very weird dream!

Another Great Year List

Apr 16

I have more birds I wanted to LIST for you. This list is from the group
known as the WATERBIRDS:

WATERBIRDS LIST:
——————–

1) Double-crested Cormorant
2) American White Pelican
3) Killdeer
4) Great Egret
5) Sanderling
6) Short-billed Dowitcher
7) Dunlin
8) Wilson’s Snipe
9) Upland Sandpiper
10) Great Blue Heron

If you do not live near the water you might have a hard time spotting
these beautiful birds. The beaches of Lake Superior and Lake Michigan might be good places to spot some of the WATERBIRDS. The Mississippi River is another great place to see WATERBIRDS. There is a National Wildlife Refuge located near Wisconsn’s bluffs along
the Mississippi River.

Ramp and Watercress Soup

Apr 16

sweetpotatosoup

Last night I made my family Sweet Potato Soup with Ramp and Watercress. All of the ingredients of the soup were from our farm!
Since it is Spring the watercress and ramp are plentiful in streams.
I picked a bunch of watercress and ramp yesterday, and got three
pounds of sweet potato from our storage.

My soup was very tasty and I am going to have it for breakfest
with wild rice!

Very delicious, and I am getting hungry again thinking
about my wonderful soup.

Thank you.

The Muskrats Misspelled

Apr 15
Muskrat Vaudeville

The number one Muskrat Vaudeville Show on Earth

I just got back from seeing my second Muskrat Vaudeville show live.
I really enjoyed seeing all the muskrats perform crazy tricks,
and stunts. I know animals are polite as are some humans. But
someone needs to tell the muskrats that they mispelled the word
Vaudeville on their lighted sign. The sign is up during the whole
show so you never forget that the muskrats can’t spell some words,
well one specific word.

I do recommend you see the show if you are around our part of Wisconsin
just don’t tell the muskrats about their error.

Red-bellied and More

Apr 15

On Monday, I have gym class with Mr. Burkminor. Some kids in my class call the gym teacher, Mr. Burpminor. That is not appropriate, but it is funny.

Today our gym teacher took our class outside to the school’s prairie.
Mr. Burkminor taught us about cross-country running. After he talked to us he had us run through a course in the school’s prairie. He told us to run along the trails in the prairie that have green flags. “Only run on the trails that have flags. The trails without flags are flooded.” That’s what Mr. Burkmeyer told us. But did Kirby listen?
I think you know the answer.

Anyway, I don’t care about Kirby’s problems. What I wanted to tell is that when I was running I saw THREE, three birds I can add to my GREAT YEAR list. The THREE PERCHING birds are:

1) The American Goldfinch
2) The Tree Swallow
3) The Red-bellied Woodpecker

And Kirby’s total today 0.
