Stinky Sunfish

Apr 17
Myles the Cairn Terrier

Myles carrying a stinky fish

As I mentioned to you yesterday, I am starting a Great Year LIST for
WISCONSIN FISH. I know I said I am including any Wisconsin fish I
eat in the list. Yuck! I did not think about seeing one of the fish
on my list carried away by Myles. He found a dead,
ORANGE SPOTTED SUNFISH by the side of the Kickapoo River and was
carrying it around in his mouth!

I chased after Myles and told him to drop the fish, but that made him only run faster. Finally, I yelled “Yummies! Yummies!,” and he stopped
in his tracks and turned around. YUMMIES are the word we taught him for
snacks, or treats.

Myles walked up to me with the fish in his mouth and then sat politely
in front of me waiting for me to give him a snack! Then I said “Drop It!”
and he carefully let the fish fall out of his mouth onto the rocks.
I picked up the rotten fish by the tail and threw it into the river.

My Chipmunk Dream

Apr 16

BeatricesDream

Last night I had the strange CHIPMUNK dream again. I was a chipmunk running through our backyard. And for some reason I decide to run up to the big glass window near our kitchen door.

As I came closer to the kitchen the sun reflected a rainbow off the window’s glass. Through the rainbow I saw Myles and my animal friends staring at me. They were in their usual spot by the glass door of our back porch. They were smiling at me and pointing. I stood on my hind legs, and sniffed the air. I then heard a hawk’s shrill call and jumped to the grass. I flattened myself out as I saw a large black shadow on the grass get larger and larger. I heard a loud THUD
and then woke up.

Very weird dream!

Another Great Year List

Apr 16

I have more birds I wanted to LIST for you. This list is from the group
known as the WATERBIRDS:

WATERBIRDS LIST:
——————–

1) Double-crested Cormorant
2) American White Pelican
3) Killdeer
4) Great Egret
5) Sanderling
6) Short-billed Dowitcher
7) Dunlin
8) Wilson’s Snipe
9) Upland Sandpiper
10) Great Blue Heron

If you do not live near the water you might have a hard time spotting
these beautiful birds. The beaches of Lake Superior and Lake Michigan might be good places to spot some of the WATERBIRDS. The Mississippi River is another great place to see WATERBIRDS. There is a National Wildlife Refuge located near Wisconsn’s bluffs along
the Mississippi River.

Brown Creeper

Apr 15

In school today I saw a bird crawling up the side of a tree.
I thought to myself who could that be? Why that cute, little
bird was none other than a Brown Creeper! I am so happy to add
this bird to my Great Year List.

Thank you. Have a nice day!

Earth Day is coming!

Apr 14

happyearthday

EARTH DAY is only eight days away! My forest friends and I have so many exciting things we are doing to celebrate EARTH DAY.

We are alway thinking that EARTH DAY is everyday. We try to make small changes in our lives to help the PLANET.

What are you doing to celebrate Earth Day?

The Red Squirrel’s Mean

Apr 13

The sun is out again, and I am hearing more birds singing when I come
home from school. Myles met me by the mailbox as usual to escort
me back to our house. Today coming up our long gravel path, Myles
ran ahead of me towards the big Oak in our front yard. The Oak Tree is where the Red Squirrel lives. When I got to the tree I heard Myles growling, and saw he was face to face with the Red squirrel.

I am right the squirrel is a giant, he is almost the same size as Myles.
A couple seconds later Myles and the squirrel were nose to nose. “Oh no,” I thought what is going to happen. Then I heard a weird sound come from Myles, and it wasn’t a bark. The squirrel turned and ran up the tree.
I looked at Myles and he was sniffing the tree. I think sound I heard from Myles was a burp!

Great Year Check List

Apr 11

This category of Wisconsin birds is hard to spot since these guys
fly fast. Here is a checklist for you to use when you go
birdwatching.

SWIFTS ETC.

  • Common Nighthawk
  • Chimney Swift
  • Whip-poor-will

Thank you. Have a Nice Day!

My Vinegar Library (part 2)

Apr 11

vinegars2

I think I have the world’s largest vinegar library. I have all kinds of vinegars in jars from A to Z. Now Kirby says he has a bigger vinegar library than I do. What he doesn’t know is that during the winter my forest friends helped me create 24 new recipes! I now have 137 different vinegars to choose from.

Some of the new recipes I think animals would like better than humans.
That is not surprising since some of the newest recipes come from muskrats, woodchucks, and a black bear. Maybe some people will not like ants in their vinegar.

Anyone one in my hometown can borrow any vinegars if they want to use a jar for dinner or lunch. My friends also borrow my recipe cards if they
like a vinegar in the library.

When Red Squirrels Attacks

Apr 10

redsquirrel_attack

It was 4:37 PM when Myles and I were walking slowly up the hill
and onto the gravel path that leads to our house. Myles meets me
everyday by our mailbox when I come home from school.

Today, Myles was extra grumpy, or growl-ie, his teeth were showing.
I didn’t know what to expect as we got closer to the front of the
house. Last night I opened the front door quickly and threw bird
seed onto the stump near the porch.

All of a sudden we heard a branch crack and leaves crunch. We looked in front of us and there was the evil, red squirrel. He is much bigger than I thought. He almost looks as big as Myles. I thought we might see the red squirrel again so I had packed a small bag full of bird seed in my pocket. I threw the bag onto the ground near the squirrel as we ran by him and up the steps onto our porch. I could not open the front door quick enough, but the squirrel was busy eating the bird seed.

I don’t know what will happen when I come home from school tomorrow.
