Earth Day Chair Project

Apr 22

newchair

Earth Day is here. Over 1 billion people all over the WORLD
participate in EARTH DAY, which makes this celebration the
biggest on the planet!!

Do you remember our tips on how to make an old chair new?
It is so easy to do:

1) Simply clean your old chair with a bucket of warm water
and environmentally friend soap.
2) Sand the old chair with sandpaper where ever there
are bumps or cuts. Start with 60 grit for the roughest parts. Make sure the chair’s surface is smooth finish with 120 grit.
3) Draw a simple picture of your chair and color or decorate it as you want.
4) Go to your LOCAL hardware store. Pick out MILK PAINT colors that match your drawing.
5) Paint your old chair with MILK PAINT to match your cute
drawing. Use a house brush for large areas and painter’s brush for small details
6) Let your chair dry outside in the air.
7) Sand the chair lightly with 200 grit and paint once more.
8) Use the 200 grit sandpaper once more to smooth out the 2nd coat of MILK PAINT.
9) Wipe the chair with a soft cloth.
7) ENJOY YOUR CHAIR!

Ramp and Watercress Soup

Apr 16

sweetpotatosoup

Last night I made my family Sweet Potato Soup with Ramp and Watercress. All of the ingredients of the soup were from our farm!
Since it is Spring the watercress and ramp are plentiful in streams.
I picked a bunch of watercress and ramp yesterday, and got three
pounds of sweet potato from our storage.

My soup was very tasty and I am going to have it for breakfest
with wild rice!

Very delicious, and I am getting hungry again thinking
about my wonderful soup.

Thank you.

The Muskrats Misspelled

Muskrat Vaudeville

The number one Muskrat Vaudeville Show on Earth

I just got back from seeing my second Muskrat Vaudeville show live.
I really enjoyed seeing all the muskrats perform crazy tricks,
and stunts. I know animals are polite as are some humans. But
someone needs to tell the muskrats that they mispelled the word
Vaudeville on their lighted sign. The sign is up during the whole
show so you never forget that the muskrats can’t spell some words,
well one specific word.

I do recommend you see the show if you are around our part of Wisconsin
just don’t tell the muskrats about their error.

Red-bellied and More

Apr 15

On Monday, I have gym class with Mr. Burkminor. Some kids in my class call the gym teacher, Mr. Burpminor. That is not appropriate, but it is funny.

Today our gym teacher took our class outside to the school’s prairie.
Mr. Burkminor taught us about cross-country running. After he talked to us he had us run through a course in the school’s prairie. He told us to run along the trails in the prairie that have green flags. “Only run on the trails that have flags. The trails without flags are flooded.” That’s what Mr. Burkmeyer told us. But did Kirby listen?
I think you know the answer.

Anyway, I don’t care about Kirby’s problems. What I wanted to tell is that when I was running I saw THREE, three birds I can add to my GREAT YEAR list. The THREE PERCHING birds are:

1) The American Goldfinch
2) The Tree Swallow
3) The Red-bellied Woodpecker

And Kirby’s total today 0.

Earth Day is coming!

happyearthday

EARTH DAY is only eight days away! My forest friends and I have so many exciting things we are doing to celebrate EARTH DAY.

We are alway thinking that EARTH DAY is everyday. We try to make small changes in our lives to help the PLANET.

What are you doing to celebrate Earth Day?

New Chicken Co-op

Apr 14

newcoops

Sometimes I call the hen houses, chicken co-ops. Chicken Co-op
is a good name because all the hens are working together and own
their own business.

I know the hen’s homes are called chicken coops. But I live
in Wisconsin, and we have a lot of co-ops here. Our food store
in Kickapoo Valley is a co-op. The taxi cab company here is a
co-op also. A co-op is a business where every worker is a part
owner in the company.

But the real reason I am writing is that we just finished painting
the chicken Coops – co-ops! They will look so beautiful when the
snow is on the ground too. We used MILK PAINT again.

The hen’s are so happy with the new houses as my Dad called them.
The hen’s seem to be standing up straighter than before and their
clucking is louder now.

The Red Squirrel’s Mean

Apr 13

The sun is out again, and I am hearing more birds singing when I come
home from school. Myles met me by the mailbox as usual to escort
me back to our house. Today coming up our long gravel path, Myles
ran ahead of me towards the big Oak in our front yard. The Oak Tree is where the Red Squirrel lives. When I got to the tree I heard Myles growling, and saw he was face to face with the Red squirrel.

I am right the squirrel is a giant, he is almost the same size as Myles.
A couple seconds later Myles and the squirrel were nose to nose. “Oh no,” I thought what is going to happen. Then I heard a weird sound come from Myles, and it wasn’t a bark. The squirrel turned and ran up the tree.
I looked at Myles and he was sniffing the tree. I think sound I heard from Myles was a burp!

Red Squirrel Moves In

Apr 08

It’s after school and Myles and I were chased in front of our house. We had to run onto the porch quickly because there is a turf war. The red squirrel has taken over our front yard by the porch and doesn’t like us around.

I do not eat acorns so I do not know why the squirrel is chasing us all around the yard. We are not squirrels either, and do not need to live in trees.

Leave us alone!

A Great Year Bird Watching

Apr 07

forestperiscope

6AM this morning was sunny so I called for my Forest Periscope. Today, I counted all the Red-tailed Hawks, Cooper’s Hawks, and Osprey I saw flying along the top of the rocky blufs above our farm. I love bird watching. This year, like last year I am doing a Great Year for Wisconsin birds. I hope to spot all of Wisconsin’s native birds passing through
our forest.

Last year, I did not see a Great Crested Flycatcher, an Eastern Screech Owl, an American Kestrel, Lapland Longspur, and Snow Bunting, and some other birds.

Kirby said he saw at least 25 species of birds so far in Wisconsin. I don’t think that is true at all. We both started on January 1st at the same time.
I think he lying again like he did last year.

A Letter from Tuvalu

Mar 28

classmatesToday was so exciting, when I got home from school my Mom gave me an envelope. It was a letter from my best friend in Tuvalu, Raita! It was great to hear from her again. She sent me a photo of her and my friends from school.

Raita asked me when I am coming home to Tuvalu again, I hope to be back soon maybe after school in the Summer. I want to invite my friends from Tuvalu to come to Wisconsin to visit me on my farm. I know they would enjoy meeting all my friends in the Kickapoo Valley, and my best friend in the U.S., Jezebel.

After I do my homework I am writing Raita a letter, and sending her some seeds I saved from my vegetable garden last year. I need to buy more stamps. I love visiting the Post Office, I like collecting American and Tuvaluan stamps. I always like to see the newest stamps available at the Post Office. My favorite stamps are the ones that have cartoons or flowers on them.

See you later!
