Every Bird is Cute

Feb 23

I have seen so many kinds of Wisconsin birds this winter.
I started my bird watching project January 1st a day after my best friend Raita did in Tuvalu.  She is in a different time zone them I am.

I would really like to see one of the cutest birds this winter, the Snowy Owl. I know we will see lots and lots of tourists from out-of-state walking around Kickapoo Valley with their thick winter coats and binoculars if the Snowy Owl comes here again.

Two years ago when I was by the Great River Road I saw cute group of American White Pelicans floating by in the Mississippi River.
Kirby said birds are slobs but I think he is just being difficult with me because he likes me.  That’s what my friend Raita thinks.

I think Kirby has his merits but birds are cute and
very organized not slobs.

45 Wisconsin Birds

May 25

It is a Great Year.

I am not sure if I have seen 45 birds yet.  Seeing one bird is enough
happiness for a whole day.

A Beautiful Wisconsin Day

May 17

Kickapoocarride

Today, Myles and I rode with Dad through the green valleys
around our house. It is so beautiful living here in Wisconsin.
I wish my friends in Tuvalu would visit me this summer.  I know they would love it here.  I could also teach them about foraging for different edible plants up the valley and in the prairie.

The winter might be too cold for them but I think they would enjoy snow shoeing, sledding and even ice fishing too.

Spring Smell Project

May 10

alium

It is very well known to you by now that I am conducting
a serious, smell research project. Today, I compared the Tulip,
Daffodil, and Alium.

It was not easy to decide which flower smells the best.
After several samples I have smelled, several sneezes, and a
runny nose I can announce that all three flowers are very pretty.
But the more important news is I am pleased to announce I have ranked the flowers by smell.

A. The Daffodil by itself is hard to smell.
B. The Tulip does not smell at all by itself either.
C.. Alium does not smell, but if you accidentally step on one
and crush it, when you are avoiding a certain Red Squirrel,
you will notice that the smell is not so great.

THE RESULTS OF THE SMELL RESEARCH
1. Daffodil – ranks OKAY
2. Tulip – ranks OKAY
3. Alium – YUCK!

Thank you.  Please Enjoy.

Red Squirrel Returns

May 08

redsquirrel
Myles and I thought he was gone but actually the squirrel was on vacation for two weeks!  A robin told us the Red Squirrel had gone to Cicero, Illinois for rest and recreation.  I don’t know anything about Cicero, Illinois maybe for squirrels it is a lovely place to visit this time of year.

I don’t care where the Red Squirrel took his vacation.  He’s back now and as mean as ever.  Today, the Red Squirrel returned to the Oak Tree dumping bird seed husks down on us!  Myles and I had to run fast to our porch.  This time I think I saw the Red Squirrel holding a large basket.  Where did he get that from Cicero?

Arbor Day is Every Day.

Apr 29

arborday-trees

Every day is a celebration for trees!  A cool breeze by your window, a healthy forest, or shade from the heat there are so many things to thank them for. But for some people like Kirby who forget about trees we honor trees with ARBOR DAY.

Happy Arbor Day to all the pines (conifers) and leaf bearing (deciduous) ones and my tree friend, Asmina the Paw Paw.

Please plant a tree with your school, friends, or family.  Water and care for the trees around your house or along your street.  Plant a tree
to honor your grandpa or grandma, or to wish a happy birthday to
your sister or brother.

Please Don’t Fly Away

Apr 29

fat_Cutebirds

As you know diary I have tried, and tried to identify Sparrows.
But I am finding it very difficult find them since they are
so small. I can spot them clustered in a bush all chatting like it’s a brown bird convention. But who are they? Is the sparrow I am seeing an American tree sparrow, or Chipping sparrow, or Field sparrow, or Clay-colored sparrow I can’t tell. Every time I try to sneak up on them one by one they pop off the tiny branches and fly away.

I know need better binoculars so I can spy on the small, brown birds without scaring them away.

My total for this year’s GREAT YEAR is not going up as
quickly since all brown birds look the same when flying away! I guess I could just add ONE to my total since I at least know they are sparrows.

They are cute so I forgive them.

Earth Day Chair Project

Apr 22

newchair

Earth Day is here. Over 1 billion people all over the WORLD
participate in EARTH DAY, which makes this celebration the
biggest on the planet!!

Do you remember our tips on how to make an old chair new?
It is so easy to do:

1) Simply clean your old chair with a bucket of warm water
and environmentally friend soap.
2) Sand the old chair with sandpaper where ever there
are bumps or cuts. Start with 60 grit for the roughest parts. Make sure the chair’s surface is smooth finish with 120 grit.
3) Draw a simple picture of your chair and color or decorate it as you want.
4) Go to your LOCAL hardware store. Pick out MILK PAINT colors that match your drawing.
5) Paint your old chair with MILK PAINT to match your cute
drawing. Use a house brush for large areas and painter’s brush for small details
6) Let your chair dry outside in the air.
7) Sand the chair lightly with 200 grit and paint once more.
8) Use the 200 grit sandpaper once more to smooth out the 2nd coat of MILK PAINT.
9) Wipe the chair with a soft cloth.
7) ENJOY YOUR CHAIR!

Tomorrow is Earth Day!

One more day until Earth Day. I can’t wait. I am joining my friends for an evening of earth friendly, entertainment. I think we are putting on the first ever play about Gaylord Nelson.

At least we are the first “professionally trained, theatre group” to put on a play about Gaylord Nelson in Kickapoo Valley. As you might have noticed I had professionally trained, theatre group in quotations. I read those exact words in a program from the Muskrat, Vaudeville show I saw last month.

I am nervous about performing in front of people because my singing voice is not so good. I have to remind myself that I will be dressed as a tree singing in a choir so the audience won’t hear my bad voice. Kirby thinks a woodpecker will hear my awful singing and think I’m a bug, and start tapping a hole in my tree.

I don’t care what he or the moms and dads in the audience think about my singing I love celebrating Earth Day!
