Arbor Day is Every Day.

Apr 29

arborday-trees

Every day is a celebration for trees!  A cool breeze by your window, a healthy forest, or shade from the heat there are so many things to thank them for. But for some people like Kirby who forget about trees we honor trees with ARBOR DAY.

Happy Arbor Day to all the pines (conifers) and leaf bearing (deciduous) ones and my tree friend, Asmina the Paw Paw.

Please plant a tree with your school, friends, or family.  Water and care for the trees around your house or along your street.  Plant a tree
to honor your grandpa or grandma, or to wish a happy birthday to
your sister or brother.

Earth Day Basics

turnoff-lights

Earth Day demands small simple steps together. Our tips my friends and I came up with are still useful today!

  • Turn off the lights when exiting a room.
  • Turn off the T.V. and unplug it when you are done watching it.
  • Turn off the computer if you are not using it.
  • Recycle plastic containers, cardboard and paper.
  • Make your own compost from food waste, yard waste and paper with non-toxic inks like soy.
  • Turn the heat down in your house and wear layers of clothing instead.
  • Use a timer and set to five minutes when you shower.
  • Turn off the water when you are brushing your teeth.
  • Make old clothes new by adding pockets with a different fabric. Have your mom sew the pocket for you.
  • If you like your old shoes keep them new by new different colored shoe lace like pink, or sky blue.
  • Don’t buy bottled water buy a nice, cute metal thermos made in the U.S.A if possible.
  • Take the bus or ride your bike to school or the library if your parents let you.
  • Don’t buy a new sketchbook or notebook, upcycle old books or magazines, and paint, write or draw, over the pages instead.

Remember you are helping to keep the earth livable for all creatures big and small, animal and plant when you practice these tips above.
Give yourself a pat on the back each time you remember these small, simple steps.

Thank you!

Ramp and Watercress Soup

Apr 16

sweetpotatosoup

Last night I made my family Sweet Potato Soup with Ramp and Watercress. All of the ingredients of the soup were from our farm!
Since it is Spring the watercress and ramp are plentiful in streams.
I picked a bunch of watercress and ramp yesterday, and got three
pounds of sweet potato from our storage.

My soup was very tasty and I am going to have it for breakfest
with wild rice!

Very delicious, and I am getting hungry again thinking
about my wonderful soup.

Thank you.

Five Fun Earth Ideas

Apr 24

Dear Diary,

Here are five easy ideas for celebrating Earth Day every single day that my friends and I came up with.

1. Do not rake your leaves if they are under trees, and not do not look ugly. Old leaves make a great natural mulch, and trap carbon from being released into the atmosphere. Old leaves are Mother Nature’s mulch! Worms love leaves, and help make them into beautiful soil for your plants!

2. Do not use mulch for your garden or yard. Mulch requires a lot of energy to make and transport.

3. A good idea for water conservation, water your outdoor plants in the morning or evening and not in the afternoon when the sun is high in the sky. Water evaporates less from the soil when the sun is not high in the sky. The more water in the soil the more nutrients your plants get the less you need to water them.

4. Fix not throw out anything you have that is broken. If a shirt has a small rip sew the rip up or find someone who can sew. If a cup has a broken handle glue it back together if it is safe to use.

5. Use bags only if you have a lot of things to carry. If the things you buy in the grocery store can all fit in your hands then tell the store cashier you do not need a bag. I have big pockets on my clothes and always put things I buy in them.

Thank you!

Planting a potato

Sep 06

Plant a potato and get sixWe had some old potatoes in our kitchen that began to sprout leaves in a paper bag underneath our sink. My mom told me that we can take the old potatoes and plant them like seeds in a pot full of dirt. After 13 weeks the old potato that I planted in a basket of soil grew into a new plant. And when I pulled the potato plant out of of the dirt like my mom told me to do there were six new potatoes ready to eat! Six potatoes grew from one old one!

Tree Rescue

Jul 22

Love a tree and it will love youLove a tree and it will love you and the earth back. My dad and I rescued some trees today that were being thrown away by a store in our town. The store owner was sad because he could not help the trees now since no one was buying them. The summer is very hot now and the trees looked so sad, the leaves were gone. My dad told the nice store owner we can help him we will make the trees healthy again. The store owner agreed to give the trees to us!

The trees now are happy they all have green leaves and stand very tall and proud. Love a tree and it will love us all.

Turn off the water!

Jul 12

brush more use less waterMy friends in our Earth Clubhouse are creating simple, helpful tips to save the planet! Today’s tip: Turn off the water when you brush your teeth. You will save gallons of water each day! And of course always use a tooth brush made of 100% recycled plastic.
