Coot Imposter

Apr 19

Coots, Coots, Coots are every where this time of year. I like to watch them when they’re in town. Did you ever notice that
Coots swim in large groups? Sometimes you can see over 100
Coots all together floating around a lake or big river.

Their colors are always black and grey. They are very stylish looking, duck-type birds.

But Today, I spotted an imposter! Did he think no one would notice him? There floating inside the Coot flotilla was a black, white duck with a brownish-purplish head. Who does he think he is? A Coot?

It was the Lesser Scaup pretending to be a Coot.
I can of course add him to my Great Year List!

Who’s That Fat Bird?

Apr 18

cutefatsparrow

I am always on the look-out for birds that I can add to my Great Year List. Today, I spotted a bird but have no idea what it is.
I always have my Wisconsin, Bird Guide with me but couldn’t find him or her anywhere in the book.

The guy or girl I saw was a cute, fat bird peeking his/her head out of a birdhouse by the Kickapoo Valley Library’s garden. I have no
idea who he or she is. I think the cute, fat bird is some type of sparrow. However, the fat bird was all brown and no other spots or marks.

It could be a mini-golden eagle? No.
That is silly. There is such thing as
a mini-gold eagle.

If you have any ideas please let me know.
Thanks.

I saw a Cedar Waxwing!

Apr 15

Yesterday morning I was looking towards the group of pine trees near the stream by our house. I was watching the sun shining through the branches.

All of a sudden I saw a flitter, and some dark object hop and plunge back into the pines. I grabbed my binoculars, and aimed them towards the branches where I saw the object last. I waited. I waited some more still longer until I saw his head peer out of the branches. When he rested on a branch closer to me I realized it was a CEDAR WAXWING! Another bird I can add to my GREAT YEAR LIST.

EARTH DAY is only eight days away! My forest friends and I have so many exciting things we are doing to celebrate EARTH DAY.

We are alway thinking that EARTH DAY is everyday. We try to make small changes in our lives to help the PLANET.

Spring Geography Bee

Apr 14

The Spring Geography Bee is back. I have been studying everyday even on
Saturday. On Saturday, I study for at least 9 hours. This year I want
to win the Geography Bee and go to the state finals in Madison.
And someday I hope to go to Washington D.C. for the national
spelling bee competition.

Bufflehead! Bufflehead!

Apr 13

Today I saw in the river by our house, a black and white duck. I thought maybe it was a lost bird from the North Pole. But when I moved in closer to look I saw that the duck had a big, black and white head! I knew right away it was a BUFFLEHEAD my newest addition to my Great Year project.

I know Kirby did not see the Bufflehead! He lives in the forest on the top of the bluffs. There is no lake, river or stream any where near his house.
I know I am must be ahead of Kirby now with the Great Year total.

My Vinegar Library (part 2)

Apr 11

vinegars2

I think I have the world’s largest vinegar library. I have all kinds of vinegars in jars from A to Z. Now Kirby says he has a bigger vinegar library than I do. What he doesn’t know is that during the winter my forest friends helped me create 24 new recipes! I now have 137 different vinegars to choose from.

Some of the new recipes I think animals would like better than humans.
That is not surprising since some of the newest recipes come from muskrats, woodchucks, and a black bear. Maybe some people will not like ants in their vinegar.

Anyone one in my hometown can borrow any vinegars if they want to use a jar for dinner or lunch. My friends also borrow my recipe cards if they
like a vinegar in the library.

My Sweet Little Blue Bird

Apr 10

At night I open the the shades in my bedroom window and look up
into the sky. The sky is so dark, like my old home Tuvalu, and
so filled with millions and millions of stars, and planets.
The same stars and planets shine in the sky in Tuvalu and in
Wisconsin.

I listen at night on my radio to my favorite show.
Tonight I heard a great song for SPRING, “My Sweet Little Blue
Bird Girl.” I don’t remember the name of the singer but I liked
the song because it reminded me that it is SPRING!!
