Every day is a celebration for trees! A cool breeze by your window, a healthy forest, or shade from the heat there are so many things to thank them for. But for some people like Kirby who forget about trees we honor trees with ARBOR DAY.
Happy Arbor Day to all the pines (conifers) and leaf bearing (deciduous) ones and my tree friend, Asmina the Paw Paw.
Please plant a tree with your school, friends, or family. Water and care for the trees around your house or along your street. Plant a tree
to honor your grandpa or grandma, or to wish a happy birthday to
your sister or brother.

Tonight we are eating fish! I love fish. My favorite place to buy fish is from my friend Jezebel’s trout farm. She lives down the hill from my farm. They raise rainbow trout on their farm as well many kinds of vegetables and raspberries. Jezebel’s Mom has a small greenhouse where she grows beautiful flowers for the tourists to buy and bring back to their gardens.
Someday Jezebel and I want to open our own flowers market we would invite farmer’s from all over the Kickapoo Valley to sell their flowers there.
I took a photograph of Jezebel’s trout farm. Did you know that it is not
proper to take a picture of the Amish people? It’s true. That is why I only photograph of farm animals, gardens, and buildings whenever I take pictures of Amish Farms for my photo album.
Will Allen, the founder and president of Growing Power Inc, Milwaukee, Wisconsin has created a system of growing greens and Tilapia. He uses
an innovative technology called AQUAPONICS.
Today was so exciting, when I got home from school my Mom gave me an envelope. It was a letter from my best friend in Tuvalu, Raita! It was great to hear from her again. She sent me a photo of her and my friends from school.
Raita asked me when I am coming home to Tuvalu again, I hope to be back soon maybe after school in the Summer. I want to invite my friends from Tuvalu to come to Wisconsin to visit me on my farm. I know they would enjoy meeting all my friends in the Kickapoo Valley, and my best friend in the U.S., Jezebel.
After I do my homework I am writing Raita a letter, and sending her some seeds I saved from my vegetable garden last year. I need to buy more stamps. I love visiting the Post Office, I like collecting American and Tuvaluan stamps. I always like to see the newest stamps available at the Post Office. My favorite stamps are the ones that have cartoons or flowers on them.
See you later!

Today after dinner the doorbell rang. My mom looked at my dad, my dad looked at me and I looked at Myles who was on the floor by my feet. “Who could that be at this hour?” my mom asked my dad. My dad got up from the couch and went to the front door to look. “Hmm it looks like it is someone for Beatrice” he said.
I jumped up from the couch and Myles ran with me to the front door. When I opened the door I saw Kirby’s steam powered, robot named Watt standing with a arm full of flowers. “Happy Varen..ti-n-duh” Watt said. “I am sorry Watt I don’t understand what you are saying.” I said to Watt. Watt was quiet and then repeated the same thing “Happy varen ti-n-duh.” My dad walked up to me and put his hand on my shoulder and said “I think Kirby’s robot is saying happy Valentine’s Day.” “Ooh how sweet.” my mom said. “Thank you” I said to Watt as he handed me the flowers and said “no thank you.”
Kirby wanted Watt to give me the flowers today because he knew that it is already Valentines day in Tuvalu. Since Tuvalu is in the Oceanic time zone it is already Tuesday, February 14th, Valentine’s Day. “How clever and thoughtful of Kirby” my mom said I turned my face away from her because I was blushing.
WATT THE ROBOT is a steam robot that gets energy from the sun via solar panels and mirrors on his back, arms and head. The sun hits the robot’s solar panels & then heats the water so hot in Watt’s metal stomach that the water becomes steam! The steam then goes through metal pipes and pushes pistons which then turn the gears of Watt’s engine creating electricity! The electricty powers Watt’s brain, arms, legs and voice.
A solar powered steam engine first premiered at the Paris World’s Fair (Exposition Universelle) in 1878! Inventor Auguste Mouchot’s solar powered ice maker made quite a stir for the crowds visiting the fair that year!
Do you like robots? Send Beatrice your favorite robot story. If she posts your story you will get your very own Beatrice sticker set.
Today I played with Myles in our house after school since it was so cold outside. Brrr! He invented a game where he sits at the top of the back stairs in our house and drops his ball down the steps to me. Boing, boing, boing the ball bounces down each step to me as I try to catch it. I then throw the ball up the stairs to him and Myles catches it with his mouth and then waits for me to ask him to drop the ball down the steps again. Mom and dad said that Myles really taught me how to fetch well.
Myles toy ball is made from old plastic bottles and wood scraps. I don’t know how to make a toy like this. My mom told me that the U.S ‘s Forest Product Laboratory is in Madison, Wisconsin where scientists research about making new products from wood and recycled plastic.

Dear Diary, today was very exciting we made our own apple cider! We picked our own apples and washed them. We cored the apples, and mashed them to make juice. We finally cooked the apple juice with a SOLAR COOKER to make it safe to drink which is called pasteurization.
How does a solar cooker work? The sun’s rays hit the shiny metal or foil covered card boards and then bounce onto the black pot of apple cider. The heat of the sun cooks the apple juice!
You can help feed families in Africa by buying a solar cooker to send them:

Today, Myles and our animal friends watched the chipmunks through the screen door on the back porch the whole day. There is a rumor in the forest valley that the chipmunks are opening and all-you-can-eat salsa buffet. There is already an all-you-can-eat nacho chips buffet near our house that some other chipmunks opened.
My mom said she hopes that the new salsa buffet opening does not mean that the hot peppers and tomatoes in our gardens start disappearing.
I can’t believe it I found a flower in the prairie that smells like chocolate. It is a pretty yellow flower with 10 petals and a pretty orange center. My mom told me that the yellow flower is part of a plant genus called Rudbeckia, and that the center of the flower is made up of parts called the stigma, pistil and stamen. In my journal I am going to draw a diagram of a flower with the names of all the parts. I will let you know when I am done.
I am giving this chocolate smelling flower my highest ranking on my smell chart lovely!
We had some old potatoes in our kitchen that began to sprout leaves in a paper bag underneath our sink. My mom told me that we can take the old potatoes and plant them like seeds in a pot full of dirt. After 13 weeks the old potato that I planted in a basket of soil grew into a new plant. And when I pulled the potato plant out of of the dirt like my mom told me to do there were six new potatoes ready to eat! Six potatoes grew from one old one!
