Birds of Prey List

Apr 08

turkey vulture

It is Monday, and again I am up very early before getting ready for school. It is 6AM again. Since I am up I wrote a list to help birdwatchers with their Great Year in Wisconsin.

What is a Great Year? A Great Year is counting all the kinds of birds you have seen in one year. Every birdwatcher starts their Great Year on January 1st.

Here is the list of BIRDS OF PREY in WISCONSIN:
(not in alphabetical order)

  • Turkey Vulture
  • Bald Eagle
  • Barred Owl
  • Great Horned Owl
  • Red-tailed Hawk
  • Osprey
  • Northern Harrier
  • Cooper’s Hawk
  • Eastern Screech Owl
  • Broad-winged Hawk
  • American Kestrel
  • Sharped Shinned Kestrel

The list is in order of my favorite Birds of Prey
to ones that are harder to see on my farm.

Kirby said he’s already seen an American Kestrel, but
I talked to the local ornithologist in Kickapoo Valley
and she said she hasn’t seen one this year.

I don’t know about that Kirby, or his robot.

A Great Year Bird Watching

6AM this morning was sunny so I called for my Forest Periscope. Today, I counted all the Red-tailed Hawks, Cooper’s Hawks, and Osprey I saw flying along the top of the rocky blufs above our farm. I love bird watching. This year, like last year I am doing a Great Year for Wisconsin birds. I hope to spot all of Wisconsin’s native birds passing through
our forest.

Last year, I did not see a Great Crested Flycatcher, an Eastern Screech Owl, an American Kestrel, Lapland Longspur, and Snow Bunting, and some other birds.

Kirby said he saw at least 25 species of birds so far in Wisconsin. I don’t think that is true at all. We both started on January 1st at the same time.
I think he lying again like he did last year.
